ferulic acid serumYes, nearly everyone knows to wash your face daily, wear sunscreen, and moisturize. However, acids may be unknown or misunderstood by those looking to elevate their skincare routine. They may sound scary or foreign, but acids are some of the most effective ingredients in skin care. There’s an acid available for every type of skin and every type of problem, but the real reason why they’re so popular is because they really work.

One of our favorites is Ferulic Acid. Naturally found in the seeds and leaves of most plants, it has an impressive self-preservation mechanism that helps it maintain a strong, resilient cell wall. In the skin it works by going deep into the lower layers to seek out and then neutralize free radicals, thus helping to prevent and repair UV and environmental damage.  This ability makes it even more powerful than other antioxidants like Vitamin C, which is why it is often combined with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and/or Retinol, to not only provide super-charged protection from the sun and pollution but also to help keep them stable.

This mighty antioxidant helps in the process of preventing the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, and other signs of premature aging, and anyone looking to elevate their anti-aging regimen should add this to their arsenal. It is effective for making new collagen in skin and stopping free-radical damage, but Ferulic Acid also helps to correct visible darkening of the skin at the surface, improve the suppleness and elasticity of the skin, smooth uneven texture, hydrate and plump lacklustre areas while also reducing any patches of mild inflammation. It’s also safe to use every day, just make sure to apply it in the morning to clean, dry skin before your moisturizer and sunscreen.

It works by acting as more of an antioxidant than what you would associate with an exfoliating acid. It has no known side effects and can be combined with other vitamins and antioxidants, which is why many formulations also contain Vitamins C or E.

The downside? Once the acid oxidizes (the hue of the acid will change from golden orange to a muddy brown) it is not as effective. As long as it’s stored in a dry, cool place and sits in a dark and/or opaque bottle, you can slow the effect of oxidation. Our Prophecy CEF serum contains Ferulic Acid and sits in such a bottle to preserve its properties.

In short, Ferulic Acid isn’t something to be feared – it’s something that will greatly elevate your skincare regimen. If you want brighter, firmer, more youthful looking skin, it might be time to try out Ferulic Acid to turn all of your complexion concerns into attainable solutions.
